Beaches of Ballina and Byron Bay
The beaches in Ballina and Byron Bay are exceptional. No visit to the area is complete without trying the surf at Lighthouse Beach, Shelly Beach and/or Angels Beach in East Ballina. Ballina’s Big Prawn is another of Australia’s iconic big things.
Built in 1989, the Big Prawn has undergone a makeover and was reopened in July 2013. It now has a tail! It is situated adjacent to Bunnings Warehouse on River Street. The giant crustacean is available for public viewing (and photos) at all hours of the day and night.
Come see another of Australia’s big things and while here grab your own fresh catch from one of the seafood stores on the opposite side of the road.
The Big Prawn stands 9 metres high and weighs 35 tonne. The restoration cost to add a tail and give the prawn a much needed makeover cost Bunnings $400,000 in 2013.

Whale Watching view points, Ballina
The most popular vantage points for whale watching in the Ballina, Byron area are Ballina North Wall, Ballina Lighthouse Hill car park, Angels Beach viewing platform, From May to October, Ballina is an excellent spot to watch the migratory humpback whales pass close to shore.
The Richmond river is very clean and well populated with fish. Bream, flathead, whiting, blackfish and tailor are among the good catches from the River. If you don’t have a boat, there are ample places to fish off the banks including the north and south walls. Luderick, bream, whiting, dart, tailor and jew are the mainstays for the wall angler, and the place is deservedly popular.
NB: When you’re fishing in NSW waters, both freshwater and saltwater, you’re required by law to carry a NSW fishing licence, (with pensioners and children being exempt). Licences are readily available from the local bait shop. Fishing reports

Stand up paddle boarding (SUP), is fast becoming a popular pass time and the Richmond River is the perfect spot, with a great long wave breaking in the bay.

Ballina Skate Park
This park is soo much fun to skate with multiple transfers, hips, spines, bowled sections and even a bit of street thrown in for good measure. I’ve been to about 15 skateparks in my life and ballina is definitely the best… its probably the best park on the east coast anyway!
